About the 16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence began in 1991 at the Women’s Global Leadership Institute.  It starts on 25 November and ends on 10 December annually.

Today, it’s a global campaign calling for action to end gender-based violence. During these 16 days, people and organisations worldwide raise awareness that violence against women and girls is a serious human rights violation.

Key Dates

  • 25 November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
  • 3 December: International Day of People with Disabilities
  • 10 December: International Human Rights Day

In Victoria
The 16 Days of Activism is a major community effort to prevent violence against women. It’s grassroots-driven and looks different across the state.

Respect Victoria lead a statewide campaign for the 16 Days of Activism and our local Respect Mallee Campaign has been designed to align with the state campaign to increase recognition and reinforce the messaging made across Victoria.

One key event is the Walk Against Family Violence, first held in Melbourne in 2009. It’s now a central part of the campaign each year in Melbourne.

Mildura Rural City Council organise a Community Walk Against Family Violence in November each year in support of White Ribbon, keep an eye on Councils socials for details.
