Community Grant Program

Mildura Rural City Council's Community Grant Program provides opportunities for not-for-profit community groups to deliver innovative local projects and programs that support Council’s vision of "making this the most liveable, people-friendly community in Australia”.

The Community Grant Program aims to:

  • Facilitate and support initiatives that strengthen the community through opportunities for participation, development, arts, inclusion, the environment and sustainability
  • Support a range of interest areas including health and wellbeing, community support, community spirit, arts, history and culture, the environment, and access and equity
  • Assist Council to deliver identified objectives, priorities and strategies and align with the Council Plan

When do grant applications open and close?

  • Large and Small Grants: Applications open Monday 7 July and close 4pm, Monday 18 August 2025.
  • Quick Response Grants: Applications open December 2025.

How do I apply for this grant?

Applications must be submitted electronically via Council’s online grants portal (Smartygrants). To start an application please call 03 5018 8100 and ask to speak to the Community Engagement Officer.

Applications must address the following mandatory criteria. If an application does not address the mandatory criteria, it will not be eligible for assessment: 

  1. Provide details of all monetary and in-kind contributions (this must be in line with the requirements of the funding level, i.e. Large Grants 1:2).
  2. Provide a plan for consultation/engagement.
  3. Identify where the project aligns with the Council Plan 2025-2029.

Applications will be scored and assessed according to the following assessment criteria:

Clearly describe the project and how it addresses one or more of the program priority areas stated in the Community Grant Guidelines.

Applications that address more than one priority area are encouraged.

Inclusiveness and accessibility

Being ‘inclusive’ and ‘accessible’ means welcoming everyone - regardless of age, gender, race and ability and that all people involved have an equal opportunity to participate at a level they choose.

Includes supporting local businesses, employment of indigenous people or people with disabilities, promotion of environmentally friendly practices, purchase/use of products that consume minimal energy, water or other resources.

Quick Response Grants Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Quick Response Grants program?

Quick Response Grants are part of the Community Grant Program and provide up to $2,000 to support timely, small-scale projects or initiatives that address an immediate community need in the Mildura Rural City Council area.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to not-for-profit community groups (or are auspiced by one), charities, individual artists or arts-related business operating under an active sole-trader ABN.

What kinds of projects are eligible?

Eligible activities include community workshops, small environmental or revegetation projects, marketing/promotional activities, emergency response and relief efforts, and initiatives that benefit community health, wellbeing, culture, education or inclusiveness. Projects must meet one of the program priorities listed in the program guidelines.

How much funding is available?

Applicants may request up to $2,000 per Quick Response Grant application.

When do these grants close?

Quick Response Grants are available in the designated funding period from December to May, and are assessed as soon as they are received. Applications for Quick Response Grants may close earlier than the advertised date if all available funds are allocated.

How do I apply?

Applicants can contact Council’s Community Grants team on 03 5018 8100 to discuss their project idea. If the project is deemed eligible, applicants will be provided with a link to submit an online application through Council’s grants portal, SmartyGrants.

Do I need insurance and supporting documentation?

Yes. Applicants must hold public liability insurance (minimum $10 million) and supply two quotes for budget items over $1,000.

How will I know if my application was successful?

Council will advise applicants in writing of the outcome. Successful applicants are required to enter into a funding agreement before funds are released.

What reporting or acquittal is required after completing my project?

If your application is successful, you must complete any reporting requirements outlined in your funding agreement — including showing how the grant funds were spent (acquittal) and providing evidence of project outcomes.
