Using sport to help achieve gender equity in our region

Published on 12 November 2019

Sunraysia residents are invited to help ‘level the playing field’ when it comes to gender equity in sport by coming along to this week's Sunraysia Sporting Equity Breakfast.

To be held on Friday 15 November at Mildura Workers Lawn Bowls Club, the event will feature keynote speakers including Change Our Game Ambassador and Barkindji Warrior Shantelle Thompson and Aligned Leisure Group Operations Manager Simon Bryson.

Their presentations will be followed by a panel discussion led by local community leaders who will share their experiences and thoughts on how gender equity in sport can make a difference in our community.

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Helen Healy said sport was a powerful medium in which to raise awareness about gender equity.

“Whether it’s direct participation, or parents’ participation through their children’s involvement, there are thousands of residents in our municipality who have a link to sport,” Cr Healy said.

“By taking the gender equity discussion onto the sporting field we’re able to reach so many people in our community, who can then take their learnings back into their homes and their own social networks.”

The Sunraysia Sporting Equity Breakfast kicks off at 6.45am for a 7.15am start. Tickets are $10 each. To purchase tickets visit eventbrite.com.au and search for 'Sunraysia Sporting Equity'. Breakfast will be provided by Verdict Catering.
