Tree maintenance program about to start

Council is about to undertake the next stage of its regular tree maintenance program across the region, aimed at ensuring our public spaces remain safe, neat and tidy.

As part of the works, Council engages expert arborists Homewood Consulting to survey the region and identify areas in need of attention.

The resulting report has identified a variety of works, ranging from tree canopy pruning through to tree removals.

Specific areas set to receive attention this month include:

• Barclay Square
• Nowingi Place
• SC Mills Park
• Deakin Avenue 
• Riverfront near Jaycee Park
• Mildura Boat Ramp

Councillor for Farming and Environmental Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said that in cases where the Homewood Report recommended removal of trees, Council only took this option as a last resort.

“Our regular proactive inspections of trees in our region, as well as the report from Homewood Consulting, are ultimately aimed at community safety and visual amenity,” Cr Cirillo said.

“Where the recommendation is tree removal, this difficult decision is made where there is a serious risk to public safety and no other option is available.

“In these cases, Council will offset any tree removals with replacement species in keeping with the visual amenity of the particular area, as we certainly recognise the value our community, and our staff, place on trees.”

Cr Cirillo added that local groups, including Greening Mildura, were consulted ahead of any significant tree maintenance works.

Residents are reminded to take note of any signage in areas where these works are under way.

This latest program of works is expected to be completed in one to two weeks.
