Take steps now to protect our environment for future generations

Sunraysia residents can play an important role protecting and preserving our region’s natural environment.
Councillor for Environmental and Sustainability Jodi Ewings said that while it was important local residents were able to enjoy our region’s natural environment, it was also important to ensure it could be appreciated by future generations as well.
“Part of the appeal of our region is the large areas of natural bushland, particularly along the Murray River,” Cr Ewings said.
“These areas provide our community with important recreation spaces to enjoy and allow visitors and locals alike to appreciate the natural beauty of our municipality.
“However, unless we protect these precious areas, they can quickly disappear.”
Residents can enjoy the benefits of our region’s natural bushland without negatively impacting on it by following a few simple steps:
- Stick to designated tracks when driving
- Never drive on muddy tracks
- Take your rubbish with you when visiting or camping in bushland areas
- Never leave any waste, including hard waste or green waste, in the bushland.
Those who happen to be doing a spot of fishing and catch carp are asked to dispose of them responsibly if not eating by placing them in a garbage bag and disposing in a bin. This will avoid fish baking in the sun and the resulting unpleasant sight and smell.
Cr Ewings said Council has a Bushland Watch Program, which aims to protect our native trees, shrubs and grasses from harm. For more information about the program visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/BushlandWatch
“Weeds are another threat to our natural environment and can pop up when we least expect it,” she said.
“If you see any problem weeds, including prickly pear, other types of cactus, African boxthorn, bridal creeper, silverleaf nightshade or boneseed, please report them.
“These weeds spread quickly and can threaten the health of our environment. They’re often found along roadsides, so your help can make a huge difference in spotting and controlling them before they become widespread.”
Council has a Weed Identification Guide for North West Victoria available to provide more information on weeds. Printed copies can be obtained by calling Council’s Environmental Sustainability Team on 03 5018 8100. Electronic copies can also be downloaded from www.mildura.vic.gov.au/weeds
