Almost every Sunraysia resident has most likely been brought into the world, cared for or benefited from the expertise of a midwife throughout their lives.

International Day of the Midwife (5 May) and International Nurses Day (12 May) recognise the positive contributions midwives and nurses make within the community and their significant impact on the healthcare sector.

During this time, tens of thousands of midwives and nurses across Australia, and the world, will take time to mark the occasion and reflect on their profession.

Council’s Maternal and Child Health service is free and available to all families with a child aged 0 to 6 and includes a series of regular health checks with a qualified Maternal and Child Health nurse.

Council currently employs 28 nurses across their Immunisation and Maternal and Child Health teams. In the 2022-23 financial year, Council’s Maternal and Child Health team delivered over 5,600 appointments, dedicated over 1,600 hours to essential services, and the Immunisation team administered over 17,500 immunisations.

Councillor for Community Health, Wellbeing Troy Bailey said the commitment of Council’s Maternal and Child Health team ensures every child has the best possible start in life.

“As we celebrate these two important days, it’s vital we recognise the tireless dedication of our midwives and nurses who play such an important role in supporting families through some of life’s most significant moments,” Cr Bailey said.

“This week is not only a time to reflect on their contributions but is also a chance for midwives across the country, past, present, and those who are training, to come together, share their stories, and celebrate their role within their community.”

Mildura Rural City Council has 11 Maternal and Child Health Centres within the municipality including Deakin Avenue, Irymple, Mildura South, Pasadena, Mansell, Red Cliffs, Nangiloc, Merbein, Ouyen, Underbool and Murrayville.

Other services within the Community Health department, coordinated by Council’s nurses and midwives, include the Sleep and Settle Program, New Parent Group, Enhanced Maternal and Child Health Service, Immunisation Service and Health Navigator Out of Home Care program.
