This Wednesday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), an important day to raise awareness about a problem which has been described as “one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society”.

Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust, such as a family member or friend.

Mildura Mayor Liam Wood said WEAAD was a valuable opportunity to not only improve awareness and recognition of elder abuse but for residents to take note of any warning signs within their own social or family networks.

“This is an important opportunity to firstly dispel some of the misconceptions about what can be classified as ‘abuse’,” Cr Wood said.

“Abuse isn’t just physical. It can be social, financial, psychological or sexual, as well as mistreatment and neglect.

“The more this message and information is highlighted in our community, the better equipped we will be to step in and take action to protect our elderly residents.”

Cr Wood said warning signs of elder abuse may include an older person seeming fearful, anxious or isolated.

“Other signs could include injuries, an absence of personal care, or unexplained changes to legal documents or finances,” he said.

“Given most elder abuse occurs behind closed doors, it’s important for loved ones to look out for these warning signs.”

Cr Wood said elderly residents could also take steps to protect themselves by making sure their financial, medical, legal and other affairs are in order.

“The overarching message here is that elder abuse is simply not on,” he said.

“The comforts, freedoms and lifestyle we enjoy today are very much the result of the hard work and sacrifice of our elderly residents, and they should be allowed to enjoy their senior years in peace, without feeling threatened.”

People who are experiencing elder abuse, or concerned about an older person, can get help by calling Seniors Rights Victoria on 1300 368 821 Monday to Friday, from 10am to 5pm, or by visiting www.seniorsrights.org.au
