Mildura Rural City Council is preparing to deliver new rolls of compostable bags for residents to use in their green bins.

As part of the rollout, which will take in 26,000 households throughout August, Council is offering an opportunity for sporting clubs and not-for-profit groups to be involved and raise funds, receiving $2 for every roll of bags they deliver.

Clubs or groups can register their interest by visiting mildura.vic.gov.au/compostablebags and filling out the online form. As part of this process proof of public liability insurance and a COVID-safe plan need to be provided.

Once expressions of interest have been submitted Council will contact groups to arrange further details, including dates for pick-up of bags for delivery.

Expressions of interest are open until 2pm on Friday 18 June.

Councillor for Environment and Sustainability Jodi Reynolds congratulated residents for supporting the new three bin service, which has diverted more than 9,000 tonnes of waste from going to landfill.

“It’s been great to see so many residents embracing the new service, which is evidenced by the significant reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill in our region,” Cr Reynolds said.

“We’re also proud to offer local clubs and not-for-profit groups the opportunity to be involved in the rollout and raise funds, which will help these hard-working groups provide programs and services that connect our community.”

New supplies of compostable bags will be delivered from 2 August to 31 August. This will be the last rollout of Council-supplied compostable bags as part of the three-bin service, however compostable bags are readily available at supermarkets and other retail outlets.
