Mildura Rural City Council has outlined its goals and priorities for protecting, improving and promoting the health and wellbeing of our municipality for the coming four years.

Council’s Community Health and Wellbeing Plan is one of the organisation’s pivotal documents, as it has the welfare of the more than 50,000 residents of our municipality at its core.

Councillors last night endorsed the Draft Community Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021, paving the way for a two-week public consultation period, during which the community are invited to provide their feedback.

Major priorities in the plan to ensure and improve the health and wellbeing of residents include:

  • Preventing violence and injury
  • Improving mental health
  • Reducing harmful alcohol and drug use
  • Tobacco-free living
  • Healthier eating and active living

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne said the new draft plan was the culmination of six month’s work, driven by a Community Health and Wellbeing Reference Group.

“This reference group was led by Council and included representatives from organisations and agencies which play a key role in improving population health outcomes in our municipality,” Cr Milne said.

“This ensured we were receiving the most accurate picture of the challenges faced in our community, including our outlying areas, as these agencies, including Council staff, are working and meeting with our residents on a regular basis.

“It also ensured that we had the expertise of specialised agencies to draw from in planning for the health and wellbeing of our community for the coming four years.”

Cr Milne said the plan would operate in conjunction with Council’s other important policies, strategies and plans to ensure a thorough and collaborative approach to planning for our district’s future.

The Draft Community Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021 is on public exhibition until Thursday, 7 September.

Copies of the plan can be downloaded from the Have Your Say area of Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Customer-Support/Have-Your-Say. Hard copies are available to view at any of Council’s Customer Service Centres and public libraries.
