Mayor’s statement in response to community safety concerns

It goes without saying that the events of late last week in Mildura’s CBD are deeply disturbing, and I know from what I’m seeing and hearing that our community is understandably feeling a whole range of emotions — anger, frustration, uncertainty, and not feeling safe. You are not alone. 

I know you also have a lot of questions about what has happened and what needs to happen in the future. Over the next few weeks, this will become clearer. It is important that we don't jump to conclusions and that our response is based on informed, accurate information. 

Please know that I, Council, and other community leaders and organisations are certainly aware and listening. 

Last Friday, and over the weekend, we have been speaking with key stakeholders to first get an accurate picture of the situation, and then ensure the relevant community leaders, services, and organisations are coming together — not only to establish the facts around what took place recently, but more importantly, to discuss community safety more broadly and a way forward. 

In the meantime, I know there is a lot of anger and heightened emotion out there, but I ask that you please try to remain respectful to one another during what is already a very difficult time for our community as we work through this.
