Mallee students’ voices heard in Arts Centre Melbourne project

The voices of school students from Cardross and Ouyen are among those featured in a state-wide Arts Centre Melbourne digital storytelling project called Stories in the Wall.

Students from five Victorian schools, including Cardross Primary and Ouyen P-12, worked with Australian playwrights Dan Giovannoni, Amelia Evans, Rachel Perks, Jessica Bellamy and Morgan Rose on the innovative project to produce 18 audio stories.

Based on the theme ‘What Lies Beneath’, due to the fact that Arts Centre Melbourne is located mostly underground, students took their inspiration from images in Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection, which features more than 600,000 items.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said students worked with the national playwrights to find hidden meanings, motivations and mysteries in the stories they created.

“This is an exciting, collaborative project that has provided young people from our region with the opportunity to write and perform alongside students from across Victoria,” Cr Modica said.

“Even more exciting is the fact that their work could be listened to and experienced by people throughout the State.”

Students’ voices in Stories in the Wall were accompanied by sound and music created by Interactive Composition students from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Sunraysia residents will be able to listen to the students’ work at the following dates and locations:

Ouyen Service Centre

Thursday 6 December to Wednesday 12 December

Mildura Arts Centre

Monday 17 December to Thursday 31 January.
