Council is completing a program of repairs and maintenance to the Irymple Swimming Pool which will delay its opening ahead of the start of the 2019/2020 swimming pool season.

As part of Council’s regular pre-season swimming pool maintenance works, which included grinding of the pool surface in preparation for repainting, several unexpected issues were detected in the 70-year-old Irymple facility’s concrete structure that need to be addressed before it opens

Further assessments by experts in the aquatic field revealed the need for a significant program of works, which could delay the pool’s opening by up to two weeks.

Council’s network of swimming pools are due to open on 1 November, meaning the Irymple Swimming Pool may not open until Friday 15 November.

Irymple residents will be offered access to Mildura Waves swimming pool at the same price they would usually pay at their local facility until the Irymple pool reopens.

Council’s General Manager Development Mandy Whelan said the works are an unavoidable result of maintaining such a large and ageing network of swimming pools.

“Our annual inspection of swimming pools is always planned to occur early enough to allow for any regular maintenance, however the unexpected scope of the works required at the Irymple pool mean there may unfortunately be up to a two-week delay in the pool reopening,” Ms Whelan said.

“We certainly recognise the importance and value local residents put on their aquatic facilities, particularly with another hot summer on the way.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and will do everything we can to minimise any delays.”

Works required at the Irymple Swimming Pool include:

  • repairs to the pool shell (started last month)
  • review and repair surface cracks
  • caulking of expansion joints
  • structural assessment
  • concrete assessment
  • core sampling and repair
  • repainting of pool surfaces.
