If you or a member of your family have had a migration experience, Mildura Arts Centre is keen to hear your story.

MAC is calling for expressions of interest for community members and local artists to contribute to an exciting new project to be unveiled later this year – Making Home: Mildura Migration Stories.

The project aims to discover, develop and tell the stories of individual or collective migration experiences drawn from our First Australian Aboriginal communities, the Colonial period when the irrigation settlement was established, the 20th Century through the First and Second World Wars, and the present time including our refugee and itinerant communities.

Making Home: Mildura Migration Stories will include an exhibition at Mildura Arts Centre, showcasing photos, artwork and items of interest, offering an insight into the journeys and experiences of migrants who have shaped where we live.

It will also feature site-specific installations, performances and events and run from 18 May to 21 July this year.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said given Sunraysia’s rich multicultural background, including being a major centre for new arrivals from Italy and Greece in the early 20th Century, there would be a diverse and rich pool of material and experiences to draw from in the region.

“We’re fortunate to live in a diverse multicultural community in Sunraysia and this is a fantastic way to not only celebrate this diversity, but explore, hear and see many of the untold stories that I’m sure are out there,” Cr Modica said.

“These and other stories, including those of our newest residents, are part of our community’s DNA, and Making Home: Mildura Migration Stories is the perfect way explore this fascinating aspect of our community’s story.”

Artists interested in this subject are also encouraged to contribute, helping to transfer some of these stories into art.

For more information or to register your interest contact Luci Marcuzzo or Jinae Connell at Mildura Arts Centre on (03) 5018 8330 or email arts_centre@mildura.vic.gov.au.

Expressions of interest must be made by Thursday 28 February 2019.
