Mildura Rural City Council, in partnership with our Ngiwa Yarna Committee, will host a Cultural Day to mark 2023 NAIDOC Week.

The Cultural Day, which will be held on Wednesday 5 July from 10am to 2pm in the Langtree Mall, will feature facilitated workshops and activities organised and run by members of our Aboriginal community aimed at children and local families.

It will also celebrate this year’s 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’, which aims to celebrate Aboriginal Elders across our region.

“Our Elders play an important role and hold a prominent place in our community,” Ngiwa Yarna Chair Patsy Doolan said.

“They are cultural knowledge holders, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders and our loved ones.

“I certainly encourage everyone in our community to take part in Council’s Cultural Day and celebrate our local Elders and what they mean to our local Aboriginal community.”

Council is now calling on Expressions of Interests from Aboriginal community members to facilitate workshops or activities across the Cultural Day that children of all ages can participate in.

Councillor for Community Development Helen Healy also encouraged the community to support the Cultural Day and help celebrate our local Aboriginal culture.

“NAIDOC Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our Aboriginal culture and heritage, while continuing to work toward reconciliation,” she said.

“I look forward to see what will be on offer at the event, and certainly encourage our community to support the day.”

Those interested are asked to complete an Expression of Interest form online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/NAIDOC23 before Friday 16 June 2023.
