The Merbein Community Hub will celebrate its 10th birthday this week, marking a decade serving a vital role for the Sunraysia community.

From a flexible space for local user groups through to community meetings during emergencies such as the recent Murray River flood event, the Merbein Community Hub has served a valuable and flexible role for local residents and organisations across the region.

Construction of the Merbein Community Hub, in 2012, was funded by Mildura Rural City Council and the Victorian Government.

Featuring two flexible meeting rooms, amenities, a large open foyer and access to the technology infrastructure of the main Merbein Library building, the Community Hub has been used for broad range of purposes over the past decade.

Officially opened on 22 March 2013, the Community Hub also allows the Merbein Library to provide many more children’s programs than it otherwise would be able to due to the additional flexible space it provides. This includes Storytime sessions, interactive games and craft activities.

To mark the popular venue’s 10th birthday this month, the community is invited to several special activities this week:

Tuesday 21 March
Birthday-themed Storytime session from 10am

Thursday 23 March
Afterschool Makerspace program from 3:45pm

Friday 24 March
Birthday-themed Storytime session from 10am

Families are welcome to attend storytimes, no bookings required. Bookings are required for the Makerspace program, please contact Merbein Library on 5018 8361.

Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Healy said the Merbein Community Hub supported organisations and residents across the region, not just the Merbein township.

“While it’s great to see the popularity of the Merbein Library and Community Hub among local residents, the Hub is actually used by a very broad range of groups,” Cr Healy said.

“For example, Sunraysia Community Health Services is just one example of a community organisation that uses the building on a weekly basis, which in turn provides additional health services to local residents.

“Over the past 12 months alone, the meeting rooms at the Merbein Community Hub have been used 301 times, illustrating both its popularity and value to the community.”
