Mildura Mayor Simon Clemence has reiterated Council’s support for the Mildura Grand Tennis International, while moving to clarify current funding arrangements.

“The Mildura Grand Tennis International certainly has a reputation as a successful event, not just in our region, but on the international tennis tour,” Cr Clemence said.

“We’re pleased to be able to partner once again with the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club and Tennis Australia for the 2019 event through our Events Funding and Support Grant Program, as we’ve done in previous years, and look forward to continuing our relationship.”

Council last year approved $7382 for this year’s event through the Events Funding and Support Grant Program, based on the application received.

Cr Clemence said that while Council’s financial support for this year’s event is less than previous years, Council has a responsibility to assess each year’s request for support based on the application received.

“Each year through our various grants programs we’re fortunate to be able to support hundreds of local groups and events, totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars,” he said.

“However this a competitive process, and along with this comes a responsibility to ensure our processes are transparent and fair, and that we assess each request for funding strictly on the information provided.

“We certainly value and recognise the success and importance of this iconic tennis event and look forward to working with event organisers to ensure its growth in 2020 and beyond.”
