Council resumes recycling

Council has resumed recycling following a decision by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) earlier this week allowing SKM to start accepting recyclable materials again.

The EPA determined on Tuesday this week that SKM had complied with the abatement notice issued by the Authority in relation to its Laverton North sites.

Council’s Manager Parks and Waste Services Matt George said that while SKM was able to start accepting material from Tuesday, it had done so progressively, meaning Council’s contracted recycler was only able to resume collecting from Mildura yesterday.

Mr George thanked Sunraysia residents for their continuing efforts to maintain the district’s strong record for recycling, despite the disruption to statewide processing of this material.

“Knowing that for a brief period our recycling was going to landfill, there was always a risk that residents may have lost the motivation to continue recycling at home, but I’m happy to say this doesn’t appear to have been the case,” he said.

“Most people have done the right thing and continued to separate their recycling at home during this period, which is fantastic.

“It not only shows they understand the importance of recycling, but means our contamination rates will remain low.”
