Community workshops for Deakin Avenue Urban Design Guidelines
Published on 29 July 2015
Two workshops will be held on Wednesday 5 August to build on the community’s comments about the future of building along Mildura’s iconic Deakin Avenue.
Mildura Rural City Council is currently working on the development of the Deakin Avenue Urban Design Guidelines which will set the framework for new construction along the entire length of Deakin Avenue, from Seventh Street through to the bend just past Seventeenth Street.
A survey and stakeholder discussions were undertaken last month with the findings to be presented at the workshops next week. The workshops will look at further developing the vision for the guidelines while working through the opportunities, constraints and overlying planning considerations with the participants.
Infrastructure and Transport portfolio Councillor Greg Brown said the initial feedback gave planners an overall sense of what people see as important issues in the future development of Deakin Avenue.
“It was quite clear most people like the wide dual carriage way of Deakin Avenue, the historic and iconic buildings and the feel of the tree lined boulevard,” Cr Brown said. “Some of the least liked features included the large unit developments and the poor condition of nature strips, as well as some of the fragmented and conflicting land uses.
“Driving along Deakin Avenue, you can see there is a real cross-section of businesses, residential properties, schools, service providers and even rural properties. The Urban Design Guidelines will balance the needs of the all different stakeholders who utilise this street.”
While many of the comments included suggestions for the central median strip, Council stressed that the guidelines are for the physical and structural development along Deakin Avenue, with the middle median strip being a complementary but separate project.
A workshop specifically for land owners and those in the development industry will be held on Wednesday afternoon, while the general public are invited to attend a public meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 5 August.
