Mildura Rural City Council is seeking community feedback to develop its first Anti-Racism Strategy.

The strategy will seek to proactively prevent and address racism in the municipality and improve the lives of all members of the community.

To support this work, Council has engaged the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to lead in independent community consultation including an online survey.

The survey, which can be completed online at https://bit.ly/AntiRacismStrategy, provides people who live or work in the Mildura Rural City Council area a chance to share their experiences of racism and discrimination. It's also an opportunity to detail key issues, priorities and needs that should be addressed in the Anti-Racism Strategy and share ideas on effective ways to reduce racism in the community.

Support is available to those who wish to complete the survey in a language other than English. The service is available from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday by calling 1300 292 153 and requesting an interpreter.

Residents can also register to attend an in-person consultation session on Wednesday 23 November at Council’s Deakin Avenue Customer Service Centre, with more information about the session available at https://bit.ly/3UzcT3Q

“Sadly, discrimination based on race, religion, culture or ethnicity is a commonly reported issue for many members in our community,” Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equity Helen Healy said.

“We know that work has to be done to tackle discrimination in our community. That is why we are proud to be developing an Anti-Racism Strategy.

“It is now vital that we hear from as many across our diverse community as possible to create the most effective strategy. Your feedback will help shape the focus and direction of the next steps towards a safer community for everyone.”
