Mildura Rural City Council has launched a community engagement initiative to help name the multi-million dollar Mildura South Regional Sporting Precinct (MSRSP).

Local residents and future users are being urged to submit their ideas over the next three weeks, with priority given to names which address one or more of the following criteria:

  • Names that relate to local Aboriginal culture or language
  • A geographic name or feature of the local area
  • A deceased person who has strong connections with the community and is held in high esteem

Names submitted should be for the entire sporting precinct, and must comply with Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) naming rules (visit https://www.land.vic.gov.au/place-naming/understand-the-naming-process/the-naming-rules for more information and advice).

A separate process will be undertaken at a later date to name the main sporting oval and indoor stadium.

A panel will then be appointed to assess submissions and shortlist three names for further community feedback and comment.

A final decision on the precinct’s name will then be made by Councillors at a future Council Meeting.

Councillor for Recreation and Events Liam Wood encouraged residents to have their say and be part of history.

“This is the community’s chance to help us find a name for this premier facility, while paying homage to our Aboriginal history, a local identity, or what makes our region unique,” he said.

“Once complete, the MSRSP will provide a home for several local sporting organisations and enable major events including concerts, conferences and national and regional sporting competitions to be held in our region.

“It will also become a preferred venue for local sporting finals matches and championships.

“The precinct will not only be a sports facility but create a significant location and feature of the region’s geographic landscape.

“This is a chance to be a part of history, and have a hand in naming our region’s newest premier facility.”

Visit www.mildura.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay to submit your ideas and have your say. Submissions will be accepted until 2pm on 2 April 2021. The final three names are expected to go out for public feedback in mid-April.
