Colouring competition to help children learn about new green

Published on 01 June 2020

Council’s Waste Services Team has launched a new colouring competition to help younger residents learn how to use their household’s new green bin.

Green bins are now being delivered to residents’ homes ahead of the new service starting on 6 July.

In a bid to provide a fun way for children to learn what does and doesn’t go into the new green bins, a colouring competition will kick off from Monday 1 June and run throughout the month.

To take part, download the colouring page by visiting Council’s website at www.mildura.vic.gov.au and searching for ‘green bin competition’. Participants can then complete the page using as much colour and creativity as they wish, and send in their entry.

In addition to learning about the new green bin, participants will be in the running for one of several prizes.

Councillor for Environment and Farming Sustainability Anthony Cirillo said the competition was part of a broader public awareness and education program Council has been running for several months.

“The key to the success of our new three-bin services is ensuring each bin is used correctly,” Cr Cirillo said.

“This will mean small changes to the way we separate household waste at home, but major changes in terms of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

“While there’s a lot of information on our website and in the media about the new three-bin service, this competition has been tailored toward our younger residents.

“By helping to educate children on how to use the green bin, it will not only improve their understanding of the new system now, but set the foundations for sustainable waste management for decades to come."

Entries will be judged in three age categories – four and under, five to seven, and eight to 12, with at least one winner per category.

There will also be an overall creativity/people’s choice award.

Entries must include the child’s name and age. A parent or guardian’s contact details must also be provided. Entries close on Tuesday 30 June.

Entries can be scanned or photographed and emailed to Emily.quinnsmyth@mildura.vic.gov.au

Alternatively, entries can be posted to:

Emily Quinn Smyth, Mildura Rural City Council, PO Box 105, Mildura, Victoria 3502.

Entries will be judged by Council staff. Winners will be notified and announced in July before being publicised on Council’s Facebook page.
