Mildura Rural City Council has worked with the Irymple South Primary School and CDC Victoria bus lines to increase safety for students, parents, school staff and motorists during drop-off and pick-up times.

Council has established two dedicated school bus parking areas catering for school buses travelling in either direction in front of the school.

The new 30-metre sealed bus parking bays and associated bollards provide more space and separation from passing traffic for children when getting on and off buses, making it much safer for them.

Councillor for Infrastructure and Assets Glenn Milne said the upgraded bus parking bays would also improve general road safety near the school.

“Previously, when there was just the one bus parking bay, there were instances where buses were forced to travel briefly in the wrong direction along the road in front of the school, or make u-turns, which obviously represented a road safety issue,” Cr Milne said.

“The addition of an extra bus parking bay, and relocating and expanding the existing parking bay has resolved these issues, making for a much safer environment for everyone.

“This is a great example of how by working closely with our local community and key stakeholders, in this case the Irymple South Primary School and CDC Victoria bus lines, we can identify issues that need attention and together come up with positive outcomes.”

Cr Milne said that in addition to increasing safety in front of the school during drop-off and pick-up times, the works had resulted in more car parking space for parents, which will allow for future disabled access improvements.
