Award nominees announced ahead of Australia Day

2018 Australia Day Award Nominees

Nineteen nominees are vying for honours across four separate categories in Mildura Rural City Council’s 2018 Australia Day Awards. 

The Awards, which recognise and celebrate the contributions individuals and groups make to our community will be announced at the Nowingi Place as part of Australia Day celebrations this Friday 26 January.

Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event/Project of the Year and Mildura Mayor Cr Mark Eckel said this year’s field of nominees was stellar.

“Every year we call on residents across the region to put forward nominations for our Australia Day Awards. They are an opportunity to thank and publicly showcase the wonderful people and organisations that give so much to make our region the great place it is,” Cr Eckel said.

“I am delighted that we received such a broad cross section of nominations and want to thank those members of the public who took the time to submit a nomination and to also congratulate every single nominee.

“I look forward to presenting the awards to all the winners on Australia Day and hope to see lots of locals at the Nowingi Place to celebrate them and enjoy our Australia Day event.”

Australia Day celebrations will get underway at 8am this Friday, with free entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy. As well as award presentations, formalities will include an Australian Citizenship ceremony, with 12 new citizens hailing from India, Iraq, Philippines, Scotland, Malaysia and Thailand being conferred. Australia Day. Ambassador Mohammed Alam will be the keynote speaker and local acoustic trio Off the Chai will perform on stage.

Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy or can purchase something delicious to eat from one of the vendors which will include a traditional barbecue breakfast, ice cream, coffee, pancakes, fresh juice and more.

There’ll be plenty of fun for the kids to enjoy too with free face painting, jumping castles, photo booth, music workshops and cricket games.

So bring along a chair, picnic blanket, friends and family, and enjoy a relaxed morning on Mildura’s riverfront! And with high temperatures forecast for Friday anyone attending the event is encouraged to where a hat, sunscreen and drink lots of water.
