Embroiderers Guild, Victoria - Mildura Branch

Welcome to The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria - Mildura Branch.

We stitch so much more than doilies!
We love embroidery in all its forms; reproducing beautiful traditional work, and actively pursuing new ideas, fabrics, threads and techniques to produce contemporary work
🧡

A wide range of techniques is taught by our members and visiting state and interstate tutors and this is exciting. We're always learning something new🧵🪡

We really enjoy sitting and sewing together and there’s always a lovely hum of chatter and people moving around to compliment others on what they are sewing. 🧵 It's important to us that everyone feels a sense of belonging, value and support. 'Being part of a community can have a positive effect on mental health and emotional wellbeing. Community involvement provides a sense of belonging and social connectedness. It can also offer extra meaning and purpose to everyday life.'  https://www.headtohealth.gov.au/meaningful-life/connectedness/community

Alice Gove, our creative and inspiring member, won both the 2023 and 2024 judges’ awards at The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria state-wide exhibitions in Melbourne for her extraordinary techniques and designs. We are all so lucky that Alice generously shares her imaginative ideas during Summer School every year, with themes including 🦋 3D Insects, Buttons, Gourds, Hyperbolic Crochet, Steampunk, Liberated Canvaswork and Woven Flowers.

Judith Antcliff taught Summer School, with 'Tatting' in 2025 and initiated 'Stitchscapes' in 2026. Every year, photos of these original artworks are published in hard-cover books and these are a source of motivation and pride.

Although we are the most remote branch, we are recognised for our efforts. Kerry Koops won the 2024 Viewers' Choice Award and the 2025 Judges' Award for Contemporary Textile Art at The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria state-wide exhibitions in Melbourne. At the same 2025 exhibition, our talented Emily Tassone won the Judges' Award for her Traditional embroidery of 'A Lady's Handkerchief'. It's certainly not our goal, but we are tickled pink with our awards because they show that we are always learning and being creative.

Our beginners also shine ☀️

We are proud of our successful initiative that welcomes beginners by teaching them to sew on original designs of ‘Chirpy Little Birds’ 🌳🐥 or 'Blooming Stitches' 🪴🌻 of a garden scene. Six basic stitches are taught to novices and more advanced stitches are taught to those with some experience. It’s popular because there is a choice of stranded cottons and fabrics in colourways to suit each individual. These finished artworks are framed or made into cushions or bags and it's a joy to see so many happy newcomers, who no longer say, 'But I'm not creative!'

We come and go whenever it suits us on our sewing days, Wednesdays and Fridays, and we get together when we can on Sundays 1-4pm. Notification is via our fortnightly newsletters, which inform and inspire us.

Whether an absolute beginner or an experienced stitcher, we'll meet you wherever you are on your stitching journey. Please call, text, email or pop in to say 'Hi' and if you text beforehand, I will happily meet you at the front door so you feel comfortable.

What do you need to bring? Nothing - we have everything you'll need to start. Or you can bring what you're working on. You will be warmly welcomed by us all and we'll share our love of stitching 😊
