The iconic Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph has a new home in the heart of Mildura’s CBD.

Councillors voted to endorse Mildura City Heart’s application to host the event until 2019 at last night’s Ordinary Council meeting.

Mildura City Heart was one of three applicants to express interest in hosting the event.

Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism Mark Eckel welcomed the event’s move to Mildura’s central business district for the coming three years.

“Bringing the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph into the heart of Mildura will bring a new perspective to the event, building on the amazing success it’s achieved since it started in 1998,” Cr Eckel said.

“From a tourism perspective it will continue to provide a significant economic boost to the region each year, attracting an estimated 1000 visitors and up to $306,000 in economic and tourism benefits annually.”

Mildura City Heart Chairman Ryan Hammerton said his board was grateful for the opportunity to host such an iconic and successful event.

“This is a fantastic opportunity, not only for the Mildura City Heart and the many traders who will embrace this event, but a chance to continue the legacy started almost 20 years ago by Ouyen Inc, and upheld more recently by the Merbein community,” Mr Hammerton said.

“We believe that hosting the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph in the heart of our city will preserve and retain this special event in the Mallee, as well as allow us to further develop the event, ensuring it continues to be a success for many years to come.”

As part of the memorandum of understanding between Council and Mildura City Heart, Council will provide $5000 towards the 2017 Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph through its Events Funding and Support Grant Program.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, 19 August.
