Young people keen to take an active role in ensuring the needs of our region’s youth are heard are encouraged to consider nominating for a position on Council’s 2019 Youth Action Committee.

Being a member of the committee provides a wide range of opportunities and experiences, including discussing youth issues, helping organise youth and community events, and taking part in leadership forums and personal development opportunities.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Min Poole said the achievements of the 2018 committee demonstrated the breadth of activities members could participate in.

They included taking part in event management training, a teen youth mental health first-aid workshop, a public speaking workshop, the Victorian Youth Conference and this year’s Mildura Youth Expo among a host of activities.

“We know we have some very talented and enthusiastic young people in our region and this is a great way for them to further explore opportunities for personal development, meet new like-minded people, and simply participate in activities that are fun and provide a real sense of achievement,” Cr Poole said.

“It’s a chance for young people to develop leadership skills, learn how government works, and importantly, provide a voice for young people where it will be heard and make a difference, identifying issues important to them.”

Cr Poole said the committee, which is an initiative of Council’s Youth Services team, also provided guidance and ideas on the best ways to recognise and promote the contribution young people make to our region.

People considering nominating must be in Year 10 in a Victorian school in 2019 and live, work or study in the Mildura Rural City Council municipality.

While all eligible young people are encouraged to attend, potential nominees are reminded that being a member on the committee requires a significant commitment.

Nominations, including online nominations, are now open and must be received by 5pm on Friday 30 November.
