Women's National Basketball League side the Bendigo Spirit will play a regular season fixture game at the Mildura Sporting Precinct on Saturday 19 February 2022.

In what is a massive coup for the region, the game against the Adelaide Lightning will attract an international audience thanks to sports streaming service Kayo, while also giving fans a chance to watch live in person.

Councillor for Recreation and Events Liam Wood welcomed the significant announcement, adding that the fixture formed part of a two-year partnership with the Spirit.

“COVID-19 restrictions are easing, and with that comes a chance to attract quality sporting events to the newly completed Mildura Sporting Precinct,” he said.

“Not only will local sporting fans get the chance to watch the elite of Australian women’s basketball in action, but the national coverage will also help put the Mildura Sporting Precinct on the map.”

Bendigo Spirit Head Coach Tracy York said the organisation was excited to call Mildura home ahead of the Saturday 19 February match-up.

“We are all very excited to make the long-awaited journey to Mildura in early 2022 and play a game in your fabulous new facility,” she said.

“I’m told February is the hottest month in Mildura, so being close to the mighty Murray River will be a huge advantage.

“The plan is to spend a few days before the game just getting acquainted with the community. Spending time in schools and supporting the locals is something we are very passionate about.

“Mildura has a strong basketball following, so sharing the season with everyone up there is something we are really looking forward to.”

Councillor for Economic Development Stefano De Pieri said the WNBL fixture would also prove a win for local businesses and tourism operators.

“We’re expecting quite a few fans will take the opportunity to travel to Mildura to watch the game, and take part in the suite of community events planned,” he said.

“While the Mildura Sporting Precinct is in its infancy, it is already delivering on its promise to deliver national events and functions through this partnership with the Bendigo Spirit.

“There will also be an opportunity for local businesses to partner with us to deliver the event, providing a chance to gain national and even international exposure.

“We will be providing more information about these sponsorship opportunities in the coming months.”
