Stormwater drainage works will get under way this week to help protect Merbein residents in the Main Avenue North area from flooding during major rain events.

The works, on the corner of the Calder Highway and Main Avenue North, will start tomorrow and are expected to take about two weeks to complete.

They include the establishment of a small drainage basin with overflow capability towards Main Avenue North, which will help mitigate stormwater flooding.

Councillor for Infrastructure and Transport Greg Brown said the project would reduce the impact of major rain events for residents in the surrounding area.

“We’ve seen over the past few years that major storm and rain events are becoming more commonplace, and Merbein was hit particularly hard a couple of years ago.

“This drainage project will help mitigate flooding of the residential area north of the Calder Highway at Main Avenue North if and when we see a repeat of these severe weather events.”

Motorists are asked to take note of any changed traffic conditions in the area during the construction period.
