Sydney Dance Company returns to Mildura Arts Centre (MAC) this month with a performance described as “contemporary dance at its most evocative and beautiful”.

Choreographed by Rafael Bonachela, ab [intra] will feature at MAC on Wednesday 24 May, fresh off a successful season in Sydney and France, including a sold-out season at the prestigious Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris.

Councillor for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Healy said this month’s performance was yet another example of MAC’s ongoing strong relationships with some of the country’s most prestigious arts companies.

“Yet again we are so fortunate in our community to be able to experience performances in our own town usually only reserved for metropolitan centres,” Cr Healy said.

“This is a result of the ongoing relationships the MAC team continue to build in the arts community across the country, and the benefits of featuring a venue capable of hosting acts of this calibre.”

Meaning ‘from within’ in Latin, ab [intra] fuses lush cello with ambient electronica, providing a unique aural backdrop to the exquisite Sydney Dance Company performers on stage.

Described as both ‘ferociously physical’ and emotion, ab [intra] has attracted glowing reviews the world over.

Cr Healy said that while the performance would take centre stage this month, the Sydney Dance Company continued to give back to communities wherever it toured, partnering with MAC to provide three special opportunities.

“It’s great to see such a high-profile dance company continuing to give back to communities,” Cr Healy said.

“By making themselves so accessible it not only helps promote and develop a greater appreciation of the performing arts in the wider community, but will help build capacity in contemporary dance in the region.”

Sydney Dance Company’s education and community engagement programs aim to increase Australia’s access to contemporary dance and include a host of free resources for teachers and students.

These resources include videos and interviews with creatives, descriptions and explanations of artists’ creative processes and a range of appreciation and composition activities related to the Company’s performance.

The Company said these resources are aimed at enhancing students’ live-performance experience as well as potentially supporting in-school workshops.
