A series of free nationally-recognised webinars in coming weeks will equip Sunraysia residents with the techniques and knowledge to prevent discrimination, violence and racism in our community.

The MATE (Motivating Action Through Empowerment) webinar training program is acknowledged as one of Australia’s leading violence research and prevention initiatives, established by Griffith University.

Council has partnered with the Victorian Government to make the webinars available in Sunraysia, offering best practice discrimination, violence and racism prevention training, developed over two decades across diverse communities throughout Australia.

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Helen Healy said the sessions would empower participants with the knowledge and tools to become proactive bystanders.

“Becoming a proactive bystander is a powerful way to stop discrimination, violence and racism in our community,” Cr Healy said.

“By becoming proactive bystanders we’re able to actively address problem behaviour, prevent violence against women, racism, discrimination, and promote equality, all of which can have a profound, positive impact on our community.”

The webinars will take place between Wednesday 23 September and Thursday 15 October and run for between one hour and three-and-a-half hours covering:

  • how to promote gender equality, inclusion and diversity in the workplace and beyond
  • how to achieve LGBTIQ cultural change
  • the bystander approach
  • building personal leadership.

“These sessions will provide participants with techniques and tips to use in their daily lives to help create a culture of equality in their workplaces, sporting teams, or any part of our community,” Cr Healy said.

“By doing so, this culture can spread throughout our community, helping to achieve a more inclusive and violence-free Sunraysia.”

To attend one or more of the sessions, residents can register at www.matesunraysia.eventbrite.com.au
