Mildura Rural City Council is seeking community feedback on the future location of a dog park in Red Cliffs.

This work is being undertaken should funding be secured to install a dog park in the township, which is a key action in the Red Cliffs & Carwarp Community Plan 2023-2028 and Council’s Public Open Space Strategy and Recreation Strategy 2021-2031.

Councillor for Sport and Recreation Glenn Milne said the eventual location must address several ‘site assessments’ as identified by Council’s Off Leash Dog Park Development Guidelines, including:

  • Be easily accessible by road
  • Have adequate space for off-street parking
  • Have connections to existing pedestrian paths and trails
  • Located within walking distance to public toilets
  • Be a reasonable distance from children’s playground
  • Be within walking distance of residential areas
  • Have good surveillance from public areas (not an isolated site)
  • Have good drainage
  • Close to existing services (like potable water
  • Be a relatively flat site
  • Some natural vegetation for shade
  • Consist of an area between 2,500 and 3,000 square metres to allow more opportunities to create different activity areas (passive and active spaces) within the park.

Cr Milne said staff had identified a parcel of land within Quandong Park as the most likely location to meet these requirements.

“Identifying the right location for the dog park is crucial to its success and will go a long way in supporting funding applications,” Cr Milne said.

“A larger space is ideally what we’re looking for, as it will help minimise overcrowding, potential dog-dog conflict and overuse of ground surfaces.

“This is a chance for the Red Cliffs community, and nearby dog owners, who may utilise the facility should the funding be secured, to have their say or share alternate ideas.”
