Mildura Rural City Council is calling on all Victorian election candidates to back three transformational projects that will unlock housing, strengthen regional connectivity and create opportunities for future generations.
Ahead of the November State Election, Council has identified three key advocacy priorities from its broader Cost of Living Advocacy Roadmap. Together, the projects represent more than $74 million in requested State Government funding.
Deputy Mayor Helen Healy said the projects were about creating more opportunities for local families, supporting jobs and investment, and ensuring our region continues to grow.
"They address some of the biggest challenges facing our community, from housing affordability and workforce attraction through to community wellbeing, tourism and regional connectivity," Cr Healy said.
One priority is the Mildura Riverfront Adventure Playspace, which would transform Jaycee Park into a major family destination on the riverfront. Backed by more than 1,500 community engagements, the project would provide inclusive recreation opportunities for young people while further enhancing Mildura's visitor appeal.
Council is seeking a $3.2 million State Government contribution, with Council committing $1.8 million towards the $5 million project.
"Families are looking for affordable ways to spend time together, and this project would create a safe, inclusive and welcoming space for young people while also boosting visitation and supporting local businesses," Cr Healy said.
Council is also seeking $41.6 million to unlock housing growth across Mildura, Irymple and Red Cliffs through critical drainage, road and sewer infrastructure.
The investment would help unlock thousands of future homes, ease housing pressures, support workforce attraction and create the conditions needed for continued economic growth.
"We have the land available to meet the Victorian Government's target of 8,500 new homes by 2051, but we need the enabling infrastructure to make that possible," Cr Healy said.
A third priority is securing $30 million for essential rejuvenation works at Mildura Airport, including runway and taxiway upgrades.
Mildura Councillor for Economic Development Rebecca Crossling said the upgrades would future proof an essential asset and strengthen connectivity for residents.
"Mildura Airport is a critical gateway for our region, supporting tourism, business, healthcare, freight and emergency services,” Cr Crossling said.
Council is calling on all election candidates to support these projects and partner with the region to deliver meaningful outcomes that will benefit the community for decades to come.
