Youth Parliament Team

The YMCA Victorian Youth Parliament is a program designed to give young Victorians an opportunity to participate in the parliamentary processes in the Victorian State Government.

It is a chance for young Victorians to advocate on issues they are passionate about and relevant to young people's lives.

A team of six participants receive public speaking and leadership training, attend residential camps and research issues they are passionate about. From this research, participants will develop a Bill that they will debate in the Victorian Parliament over three days in July 2026.

The program provides participants with great personal and professional development opportunities, and the bills handed to the relevant Ministers provide the government with awareness into what issues are important to young Victorians.

The program involves two residential camps at YMCA Lake Dewar Discovery Camp, Myrniong. The training weekend prepares participants on parliamentary etiquette, public speaking, media training with skill development sessions in leadership and confidence.

The Youth Parliament program culminates in a week-long residential camp, including three days of debate in Parliament House. The remainder of the time is spent at the campsite in preparation and taking part in advocacy and leadership-building sessions.

Allegra Cirillo

While studying Legal Studies at Irymple Secondary College, Allegra was fascinated by the way solicitors and barristers can quickly comprehend and respond to complex information. Their ability to think on their feet and construct effective arguments inspired me. Through this program, I’m most looking forward to developing those same skills and gaining firsthand insight into how they’re applied in real world political settings. Allegra believes being part of the Youth Parliament Program would give her the chance to develop her public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills, while also learning more about how Parliament operates. She is especially excited to meet other young people who are passionate about making a difference and to experience the process of debating and passing bills firsthand.

Alyia Alassani

Alyia is a proud Iraqi, Barkandji, and Malyangapa woman. She is passionate about learning how policy and advocacy can drive real, systemic change. Through Youth Parliament, Alyia hopes to strengthen her leadership, communication, and public speaking skills, while gaining insight into how young people can influence decisions that impact regional communities like ours. Most importantly, she wants to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of her community, fostering a more connected, fair, and inclusive future. Her advocacy is guided by the principles of justice, equality, fairness, and community transparency, with the goal of building a place where everyone, regardless of who they are, can thrive.

Iris is interested in participating in the Youth Parliament Team as she is motivated by the chance to learn more about leadership, teamwork, and how government works. She is extremely interested in taking her passion for legal studies that step further and put it into practice. “I hope to learn how to turn ideas into real action and further understand how parliament makes decisions”. She would also like to build her confidence in public speaking and teamwork.

Sophie Lloyd

As a young person in an isolated rural area such as Mildura, Sophie finds it is important to not just advocate for topics that affect those within the cities, but those of us who may need to travel long hours to have certain opportunities. She has an interest in politics and finds current events extremely interesting alongside past events. Sophie hopes to not just create an understanding of how it feels to work closely with a group on such an important issue, but to be able to have an opportunity she would not have otherwise. She hopes to get an experience that she will remember and feel more educated in legal topics afterwards as a result.

Ella Adolph

She loves supporting others and Youth parliament team would be a fantastic opportunity to have her input and to make a positive difference. Ella wishes to understand more about parliamentary standards and what a career pathway in this field would entail, while gaining further skills in public speaking and confidence. She is currently in year 11 at St Josephs College Mildura and is an extremely passionate student and keen to further her pathway in legal studies through to VCE.
