Youth Radio Program

Mildura Rural City Council’s Youth Engagement Services is working in partnership with HOTFM Community Radio to deliver a Youth Radio Program from February to November 2026. The program provides young people aged 12 to 25 with an opportunity to plan and broadcast a weekly, one hour youth radio show.

The purpose of the radio program is to:

  • Participate in radio broadcasting
  • Create, plan and present content for a youth radio show
  • Represent local and new music, arts and ideas
  • Be involved in community radio

What are the expectations for young people?

  • Work cooperatively with other members in delivering a youth radio program
  •  Preparation and broadcasting of a youth radio program
  •  Be involved as an active participant: Term One: 12 February to 26 March, Term Two: 7 May to 18 June, Term Three: 30 July to 10 September, Term Four: 15 October to 26 November
  •  Participate in a Radio Training Workshop to be held on 22 January 2026 (10am to 3pm)

When and where do we meet?

  • The YES radio show is held live at HOTFM, Bryne Court Mildura
  • The youth radio program will be on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm during the school term   
  • Some additional hours involving evening, weekends and school holidays may be required at times
  • All meetings, training and radio sessions will be supervised by Mildura Rural City Council Youth Engagement Services staff
  • Transport can be provided to young people to and from the radio station

What training will be offered?

All participants will be provided opportunities to attend various training and development sessions. This may include induction training, occupational health and safety, media training, public speaking, and radio programming.

The radio program training will cover the following:

  • Introduction to radio – how to develop a run sheet, select music, write a segment script
  • What is community radio and why it’s so important?
  • Idea generation – how to come up with radio content
  • Community broadcasting media law - how to be a responsible radio presenter
  • Your voice and how to use it
  • Content creation
  • Interview techniques
  • Studio operation
  • Program production and development
  • Occupational Health & Safety information
