Mildura Rural City Council residents could be in the running to win a trip to Dali, China as part of a photographic competition which kicks off next week.

The Give it Your Best Shot photo competition is designed to strengthen ties between the Mildura region and our Sister City Dali, as well as eight other Australia - southwest China sister-city pairs.

Tourism and Economic Development Portfolio Councillor John Arnold urged locals to get behind the competition and showcase to the world what makes our region so special.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to give the people of Dali a glimpse in to the landscapes, customs and culture of our region,” Cr Arnold said.

“It’s also a chance for local photographers of all levels to share their photography with an international audience and potentially win a trip to China.”

Opening on Monday 14 March 2016, the competition is an initiative of the Australian Consulate-General in Chengdu, with support from nine Councils across Australia with sister cities based in southwest China.

“With the growing importance of China to Australia’s future, strengthening the links between the people of our sister cities is more critical than ever,” Consul-General Nancy Gordon said.

The China Australia Free Trade Agreement is on everyone’s lips, so there’s never been a better time for Mildura to connect with China at the grass roots.”

Cr Arnold said Mildura and Dali had had a strong connection for more than a dozen years.

“Mildura Rural City Council and The Prefecture of Dali signed a formal Sister City Agreement in June 2006. Since then, representatives from Mildura have visited Dali, and vice-versa on numerous occasions.

“Aiming to develop mutual understanding, trade and education opportunities, the visits have included civic and trade delegations as well as exchange programs between schools and tertiary institutions.”

The Give it Your Best Shot competition opens on Monday 14 March 2016 and closes at midnight on Thursday 14 April 2016.

Shortlisted photographers from Mildura will be invited to have their works displayed in Dali at a community exhibition.

One grand prize winner from Australia and one from southwest China will win flights, accommodation and a week of activities in their sister-city so they can “see it like a local”. Runners up will win return flights between Australia and southwest China on Sichuan Airlines.
