Council hosts ‘how to’ session for election hopefuls

Published on 31 May 2016

Mildura Rural City Council will host a series of public information session for residents considering standing for council in the upcoming elections.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Gerard José said standing for council is a relatively simple process, but can be daunting if you’re not certain what is required or how to nominate and campaign.

“The information sessions will outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected.

“I strongly encourage any residents contemplating standing for election to attend this information session,” said Mr José.

The first information sessions for prospective candidates in the general elections for Mildura Rural City Council will be held on Wednesday 15 June 2016 from 7pm until 9pm in the Committee Room at Council’s Deakin Avenue office and will be hosted by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV).

Speakers from the MAV and also from neighbouring councils, will provide information about the council area, and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.

A video presentation Q&A with councillors from other municipalities will assist prospective candidates to gain an understanding of what the public will expect of you as a councillor, time commitments, challenges and rewards.

Other sessions will also be conducted by Council staff and will cover other aspects of Council’s day to day operations and practical issues such as conflicts of interest and the formal Councillor Induction process.

All the sessions are free will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions.

Further information about the sessions is available from Council’s Governance team on (03) 5018 8100 and interested candidates are also encouraged to direct any specific questions to Gerard José directly at ceo@mildura.vic.gov.au

In keeping with Mildura Rural City Council’s Privacy Policy, all registrations and enquires will be treated in the strictest confidence.
