Caring for Our Natural Environment

Our natural environment is vital to the health of our community and local industries.

The Mallee region is unique, with its semi-arid climate, limestone landforms, salt pans and the Murray River floodplains. These landscapes support a wide variety of plants, animals and ecosystems.

Over time land clearing has changed much of our environment, leaving only small patches of native vegetation. These remaining patches are precious as they provide food and shelter for wildlife and act as corridors connecting habitats across the region. Protecting these areas is the best way to protect our natural areas from further degradation.

In Victoria native plants and animals are protected by law and species listed as threatened, those classed as critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable, have extra protection. Our municipality also contains rare ecological communities, including buloke woodlands and grey box grassy woodlands, which are protected under national legislation.
