More than 20 local organisations and businesses have successfully applied for almost $120,000 through Mildura Rural City Council’s Community Activation Funding program.

The program aims to increase community participation and connection following the ongoing social impacts of COVID-19 through innovative projects, programs and activities.

Two funding streams were available, targeted at projects by businesses and community not-for-profit organisations.

The business category was aimed at supporting free or low-cost sport, recreation or arts activities that encouraged people impacted by the pandemic to come together and reconnect again.

The community category was designed to boost the ability of local groups to create projects that support connections between family, friends and the community and increase participation.

Mildura Mayor Jason Modica congratulated the 23 successful applicants.

“We need to remember that many of the people behind these fantastic projects may well have been impacted by COVID-19 restrictions themselves, yet they’ve managed to put that aside and come up with projects and initiatives to help the broader community,” Cr Modica said.

“We need to congratulate these groups and businesses for their innovative projects and their contributions to our community’s wellbeing.”

Community groups to successfully apply for funding included the Christie Centre, which received $3,000 to create a community arts space in the Mildura CBD, offering free use of materials and weekly workshops for the community.

Other community projects include the Riverside Golf Club’s come-and-try days, which will provide participants with the basics of golf over six sessions.

Eight businesses successfully applied for funding for projects including free women’s self-defence classes and 34 ‘Kids Bully Proof’ classes in local schools by Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and low-cost skateboarding lessons with accredited coaches by Antisocial Collective.

Council’s Community Activation Funding program is funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Activation and Social Isolation (CASI) initiative.
