Access and inclusion plan shows the way forward

Published on 14 May 2015

Mildura Rural City Council is offering residents a chance to get involved in the implementation of the 2014 – 2018 Community Access and Inclusion Plan, with an information day to be held on Thursday 21 May 2015.

The plan was adopted by Council in October 2014 and looks at strategies and actions to ensure Council services are accessible and our community is one which gives everyone the opportunity to participate.

Community Wellbeing and Services Councillor Sharyon Peart said the plan was formulated using feedback from people who live, work and visit our region and their experiences when trying to access Council facilities, services and information.

“The 2014-2018 Community Access and Inclusion Plan is the strategic document which guides how we implement our services over the next three to four years,” said Cr Peart.

“Accessibility refers to everything we do – can a hearing-impaired person get help over the phone, can a person with limited mobility access our Council meetings?

“We’ve now got the Community Access and Inclusion Plan in place and we want to talk to people about how we now go about implementing changes, informing people about what services we have to help them and also what else we need to be doing.

“The plan is our guide, but we recognise that it needs to be a fluid document that can be adapted to the changing needs of our community as necessary.”

To give people an understanding of what Council has achieved since the plan was adopted in October and the progress of the plans into the future, Council will be holding a session for everyone in the community including people who face access issues on a daily basis.

“This session is for everyone to come and get involved in the implementation of this plan,” Cr Peart explained.  “It’s not just about Council going out and making changes – this is about the community taking ownership of the plan and helping us to make sure we’re on the right track.”

The information session will be held on Thursday 21 May in the Benetook Room at the Alfred Deakin Centre from 9:30am to 12pm.

The Community Access and Inclusion Plan 2014 – 2018  is available on Council’s website at http://www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Publications/Council-Plans-Strategies
