Mildura Rural City Council’s Corroborree, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, will return in 2024.

As part of this year’s event, we are calling on Local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and performers to enter our Dance Competition.

Entry is open to dance groups consisting of at least five members. With cash prizes available across two categories – Open ($2,500) and Schools ($500).

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and will be based on the following criteria:

  • Physical skill
  • Story-telling
  • Celebration of culture
  • Costuming

Terms and Conditions

Information on how to enter the 2024 Mildura Corroboree Dance Competition and the prizes form part of these Terms and Conditions of entry. Participation in this competition is deemed acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. The promoter of the competition is Mildura Rural City Council and Ngiwa Yarna Committee.

Who may enter

Entry is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Entrants must enter as part of a ‘dance group’ and each member of the dance group will be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.  Dance groups must have a minimum of five (5) dancers and must appoint a group leader.

Group Leader Responsibilities

  • Completing the Mildura Corroboree 2024 dance group registration form for the group
  • Ensuring group abide by rules and terms outlined within these terms and conditions
  • Receiving participation payment or prize money and distributing this to dance group members within seven (7) days
  • Responsibility of child safety for anyone under the age of 18 in the dance group
  • Organising any costumes, music, transport, etc for group members

What the competition will consist of

 Up to 16 dance groups will be competing for two major cash prizes (visa prepaid card). Each group must dance for a minimum of 10 minutes, but no more than 15 minutes.

Groups can source their own live music or use recorded music as an accompaniment. Prerecorded music must be provided via USB or CD by 5pm Wednesday 13 March to 76 Deakin Avenue, Mildura.

The groups will be judged by a panel on the night, and the winning group announced at the event conclusion.

How do I enter?

Registration for the 2024 Mildura Corroboree opens in January 2024. Each Dance Group may only enter once. Registration closes Friday 23 February 2024.

To enter the Competition, you must:

  • Complete the registration form provided below; and;
  • Adhere to the criteria listed detailed within these terms and conditions.

How will entries be judged?

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges at the 2024 Mildura Corroboree on Wednesday 20 March 2024. All rounds of judging will be judged by a panel of five (5) selected judges comprising of a Mildura Rural City Councillor, and four local Aboriginal elders.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Physical skill
  • Story-telling
  • Celebration of culture
  • Costuming

The winners will be announced and notified at the conclusion of the Corroboree. The judging panel’s decision is final.

What are the Prizes?

Prizes will be awarded in two categories:

  • An open category (available for any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups of more than five (5) people)
  • A schools category (for groups associated with a school or educational institution)

The winning open category dance group will receive a visa pre-paid card for $2,500. The winning school groups will receive $500.

Mildura Rural City Council will consult with the dance group leader nominated in the registration form as to the payee details for the prize. The prize must be made payable to a person over 18 years old. It is the nominated group leader’s responsibility to distribute the prize money to participants. Mildura Rural City Council assumes no responsibility once prize money has been awarded to group leaders.

Recording and Photography Consent

By entering the 2024 Mildura Corroboree, you agree that we can photograph, film or make any sound or audio-visual recording of your performance for our own archival purposes and for use in any media.

Participation and Disqualification

The 2024 Mildura Corroboree is a drug and alcohol-free event. Dance participants not abiding to the rules of the Corroboree (eg. safety rules, drug and alcohol and free rules) risk disqualification from the competition for their dance group. Mildura Rural City Council reserves the right not to disqualify team leaders, or any member of a dance group, if it is determined, at our discretion, that it would bring the Corroboree event into disrepute, or cause damage or harm to any person.

Working with Children

Group leaders warrant that the dance group and each performer will comply with the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005. All participants in the 2024 Mildura Corroboree must not be prohibited from working with children. Group leaders are responsible for ensuring parental consent for participation of group members under the age of 18 to participate in the 2024 Mildura Corroboree.

Indemnity

By entering the 2024 Mildura Corroboree 2024 you agree to release and hold harmless the promoter, its officers, employees, contractors and agents from any and all claims, liability or any injury, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this event, its promotion or any prize won.
