Women and girls will have the Mildura Waves pools to themselves each Friday night for the coming two months as part of a new Women’s Swimming Session pilot program.

Starting this Friday 23 February, the program is in response to frequent feedback from women in our region who’ve indicated that one of the reasons they don’t swim is because they feel more comfortable in a women-only environment.

The initiative is a partnership between Council and Belgravia Leisure and will include female-only staff and lifeguards during each session. The pool facilities will only be open to women during these times, however boys under five can attend with an adult.

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equality Ali Cupper said the program would run for eight weeks each Friday from 23 February to 27 April, between 7.15pm and 8.15pm.

“This is a great initiative that will provide a safe and welcoming space for women, which can improve their self-esteem and self-awareness, as well as the obvious health benefits to come out of increased physical activity,” Cr Cupper said.

Belgravia Leisure Chief Executive Officer Nick Cox encouraged Sunraysia residents to take advantage of the pilot program.

“Women and girls of all ages and abilities across the Sunraysia region can exercise and socialise in the Mildura Waves pool, sauna and spa in what for many may be a more comfortable environment,” Mr Cox said.

Other benefits include reducing stress and helping isolated women learn important skills such as water familiarisation and improved aquatic safety skills.

Cost for each session is $5.30 per adult and $3.80 per child.
