Working with sporting clubs to recover from Remembrance Day storm

Mildura Rural City Council has completed works to provide temporary change rooms, toilets and showers at Merbein’s Kenny Park in time for the 2017 Sunraysia Football Netball League season.

The Merbein Football Netball Club (MFNC) facilities were severely damaged by the 11 November storms last year, leaving the buildings unusable.

Council has been working closely with the club in recent months to provide temporary facilities ahead of the football season kick-off while permanent reinstatement works are arranged.

In March this year, Council supplied and transported a shipping container to Kenny Park, allowing the club to store its equipment.

Council has since sourced and supplied temporary change rooms for both ‘home’ and ‘away’ teams, which have been installed and connected to power and water.

Toilet and shower blocks have also been sourced and installed, including the completion of plumbing works and connection to power.

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne said that while for many in the community the Remembrance Day storms are a distant memory, many farmers, small businesses and community and sporting groups are still significantly impacted.

“We’ll continue to work with community and sporting groups, many of which were severely impacted by the storms last year, to ensure they have the facilities and services they need,” Cr Milne said.

Merbein Football Netball Club President Toney Hurley said he was pleased the facilities were in readiness for the start of the 2017 SFNL season.

“I’d like to thank Council for their efforts. It’s been a tight schedule, they promised they’d have it done in time for this weekend and they’ve delivered,” Mr Hurley said.
