Mildura Rural City Council’s official Australia Day activities are the perfect way to celebrate our nation this month.

The free celebrations at the Nowingi Place will kick off at 8am on Thursday 26 January with a traditional BBQ breakfast cooked by the Mildura Lions Club which will be available until 10am.

Residents can then sit back and relax near the banks of the beautiful Murray River and listen to this year’s Australia Day Ambassador Claude Lombard of ‘Lombard the Paper People’ fame, as he takes residents through his amazing life story as a successful businessman and philanthropist.

The community will then be able to meet our newest Australians following the official citizenship ceremony, as well as congratulate this year’s Australia Day award winners.

Awards will be announced for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event/Project of the Year.

In between official proceedings, there will be plenty of free activities for the kids, including face painting, an interactive drumming workshop and backyard cricket.

There will also be live entertainment provided by local music and cultural groups throughout the morning, wrapping up at noon.

The MC for this year’s event meanwhile will be Northern Mallee Leaders Program graduate Louise Hodgetts.

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne urged the community to embrace Australia Day, both at Council’s official celebrations and the numerous events being held in towns surrounding Mildura.

“Australia Day is a special day and Council’s annual free celebrations on the riverfront have been a very popular way to mark this day for decades,” Cr Milne said.

“With a traditional barbecue breakfast, plenty of activities for the kids and that unique Australia Day atmosphere this event seems to create, it’s the perfect way to celebrate our nation’s special day.

“It’s also an important day to recognise the achievements of our Australia Day award recipients, who each year continue to impress with their dedication, innovation and creativity.

“And it’s a very memorable day of course for our newest Australians, who we welcome each year as part of our citizenship ceremony.”

In addition to the traditional BBQ breakfast provided by the Mildura Lions Club, there will be a wide variety of other food and drinks available between 8am and midday, including fresh fruit salad with yoghurt, jaffles, Dutch donuts, pancakes, ice-cream and fresh coffee from the coffee van.

So bring along a chair, picnic blanket, friends and family, and enjoy a relaxed morning on Mildura’s riverfront!
