Australia’s best female hip hop breakdancer will take the Mildura Arts Centre stage this week as part of two very special nights celebrating women in our region.

Phunktional Arts will present A Touch of Grace – Shadow Warrior this Friday and Saturday nights, 21 and 22 July, featuring hip hop breakdancer Demi Sorono.

This powerful, one-woman show will highlight the themes of multiculturalism, family, love and the importance of art, communicated through Demi’s dance and spoken word poetry, featuring original songs from MC Julez and the high-impact animation of artist Sebastian Fowler.

Demi grew up in the Philippines before migrating to Melbourne with her mother, later becoming an ‘insta-celebrity’ following her performances as a contestant on a reality television show.

Her shows explore her journey as a single mother and performer, as well as her experience through the immigration process.

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said this Friday and Saturday night’s events were the perfect way to celebrate the women of the Mallee.

“This is a show not to be missed and will be complimented by a packed program of events over two nights this Friday and Saturday, specifically targeted at the women in our region,” Cr Modica said.

“Through Phunktional Arts’ network of local women and partner organisations, they have invited local women to be part of an Everyday Heroes exhibition featuring and celebrating local women, which will premier in the Mildura Arts Centre foyer ahead of Demi’s performance on Friday night.

“Other entertainment on the night, which is a women’s-only gala event, includes performances by local women’s dance groups and choir as well as a question-and-answer session with Demi following her performance.”

Saturday’s night’s program will again feature the Everyday Heroes exhibition, local dance groups and choir, but will also include performances by local hip hop groups and a repeat performance of A Touch of Grace – Shadow Warrior.

Entry to both events is by gold coin donation, which will be donated to the Mallee Sexual Assault Unit and Mallee Domestic Violence Services.

Both nights get under way from 7pm and are suitable for adult audiences 17 and over. For more details call the Mildura Arts Centre on (03) 5018 8330 or visit the Mildura Arts Centre website at www.milduraartscentre.com.au and click to the What’s On page.
