Council libraries offer a feast for bookworms with three author visits

Published on 20 March 2017

The Mildura Rural City Council Library Service will play host to three authors in five days later this month.

Glenna Thomson and best-selling author Meredith Appleyard will visit the Mildura Library on Saturday, 25 March and Monday, 27 March respectively, while John Basham will visit the Merbein Library on Thursday, 30 March, providing a chance for Sunraysia residents to gain an insight into the inspiration behind the authors’ works, as well as what goes into writing a book.

Mildura Rural City Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said the visits represented a unique opportunity for the region’s readers.

“We’re so fortunate to have these three successful authors visit the Mildura and Merbein Libraries in the space of a week and making themselves available to the public,” Cr Modica said.

“And the great thing is, they represent three very different genres, allowing us to learn how they have developed as authors, the writing process for the different genres and the messages they want to share.”

Glenna Thomson grew up on an apple orchard before raising her own family and developing her career. But in 2004 her life turned full circle when she and her husband bought a cattle property and blueberry orchard in north-east Victoria.  Blueberry, her first novel, is about starting over, and recounts how a little blueberry orchard in the hills offers one woman the chance to change her life forever.

John Basham is the author of Caravan survival guide and 4WD survival guide and is passionate about sharing his love of caravanning and 4WD.

Meredith Appleyard is the bestselling author of The doctor calling and The Country Practice. Her latest novel No job for a girl is a quirky and insightful story about fighting for what you believe in, and finding love where you least expect it.
