Following the successful Vassilieff: Journey to Mildura exhibition in early 2014, curator Felicity St John Moore is asking the Mildura community for help on her next project.

Mildura Arts Centre is assisting curator, Felicity St John Moore, and filmmaker Richard Moore, to put together a documentary about the life and art of Danila Vassilieff.  As part of the project they are looking for old movies of the painter and sculptor from the time he lived and taught in Mildura and Swan Hill townships during the early 1950’s.

Arts and Culture portfolio Councillor Jill Joslyn said it was a fabulous opportunity to have any local archival footage included in what will be an important tribute to a man who had a significant influence on Australian art.

“Danila lived and worked here and he made a colourful contribution to our local community,”Cr Joslyn said.  “It would be great to see his time in Mildura recorded as part of this important documentary.

“If you have footage from this period or perhaps even from when he taught at Mildura High School (now Mildura Secondary College), we really encourage you to get in contact with the staff at MAC. You may have some film footage that can be used as part of the documentary.”

Vassilieff: Journey to Mildura curated by Felicity St John Moore was exhibited at Mildura Arts Centre from 22 November 2013 until 13 April 2014 and more than 9,000 people visited the exhibition, making it one of the most popular ever held.

Anyone with footage or photographs are urged to contact Mildura Arts Centre on (03) 5018 8330 or email gallery@mildura.vic.gov.au
