Powerhouse precinct design plans unveiled

Flexible event spaces and an exciting new purpose-built basement venue are among features unveiled in the latest designs for the Powerhouse precinct.
The designs are the result of a comprehensive community engagement process, including feedback from the general community and businesses based in the precinct. Features include:
- flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces
- transformation of the former Powerhouse basement space into a new purpose-built venue
- visitor interpretation and inspiration spaces
- an events kitchen
- large outdoor shade structure
The entire precinct will sit within new landscaping, matching the rest of the redeveloped riverfront area.
Mildura Mayor Jason Modica said the Powerhouse precinct has been designed to provide the local community and visitors with an iconic destination filled with activity and vibrancy.
"Once completed this will be yet another major drawcard for visitors to our region and the resulting economic stimulus that flows from that through spending in the accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors,” Cr Modica said.
“It will also be a strong economic driver throughout the construction phase, offering opportunities for local companies and trades to work on the precinct.”
Owner and operator of the popular Shippy’s cafe, Michael Shipsides, is among business operators who have contributed to the plans through the consultation process.
"There are a whole host of exciting possibilities for us as a business in the precinct, but more importantly for the community and the broader riverfront area," Mr Shipsides said.
Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Martin Hawson said development of the plans has very much been a collaborative process with the community.
"Throughout development of this precinct we've been guided by what the community would like to see, including two comprehensive rounds of public consultation," Mr Hawson said.
"These latest designs reflect this feedback and will celebrate the unique history of the site, creating a destination full of activity and high-quality spaces for the community and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.”
The new plans will be part of a Powerhouse precinct preview event later this month, allowing residents to view the latest designs and speak directly to the project team while standing in the heart of the new precinct. Details about the event will be announced in coming weeks.
The Powerhouse precinct redevelopment includes contributions from the Victorian Government's Crisis Committee of Cabinet Infrastructure Fund ($5 million), Regional Infrastructure Fund ($500,000) and Sustainability Victoria ($196,000). The Australian Government recently announced $1 million for the precinct through the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program.
