Community Walk Against Family Violence returns to Mildura’s streets

The Sunraysia community is encouraged to converge on Mildura’s Langtree Mall tomorrow for the return of Mildura Rural City Council’s Community Walk Against Family Violence to mark White Ribbon Day.

Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Gender Equity Helen Healy encouraged as many people as possible to join this year’s walk.

“Gendered violence continues to be a major issue in our community, giving us the unenviable statistic of having one of the highest incidents per head of population in Victoria,” Cr Healy said.

“Raising awareness about the severity of the issue, contributing factors behind gendered violence, and education around how to prevent it are the keys to bringing down these figures, and ultimately preventing the thousands of people in our region who are victims each year.

“Our Community Walk Against Family Violence is a powerful way to do this, and we’ve been fortunate to have strong support from our amazing community each year we’ve held this event, with hundreds joining us in taking to the streets of our CBD.”

This year’s Community Walk Against Family Violence will start in the Langtree Mall at midday before making its way along Langtree Avenue and down the Langtree Avenue connection stairs.

Participants will then make their way to Jaycee Park, where the event will conclude with a host of information stalls from key service providers and a free community barbecue.

The whole community is encouraged to support his year’s event, which returns after several years' absence due to COVID restrictions.

Participants are encouraged to wear something white to clearly show their support for the event.

Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner Dr Niki Vincent was originally scheduled to lead this year’s walk but is unfortunately unable to attend, however her message will still be delivered at the start of tomorrow’s walk in the Langtree Mall.
