Choosing to become an Australian citizen

Choosing to become an Australian citizen demonstrates your personal loyalty and commitment to Australia and its people.

To become an Australian citizen, you must first apply for Australian citizenship through the Department of Home Affairs.  Application forms and information for applying for Australian citizenship can be obtained from the Department of Home Affairs website https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship/become-a-citizen

Attending a citizenship ceremony

Once your application has been approved, Department of Home Affairs will notify this office - this can take up to three months from the date of your approval.

The citizenship ceremonies are administered by the Community Partnerships Branch.

As soon as Council has been notified by the Department of Home Affairs, you will be sent an invitation by mail that will contain all the information that you will need to know.

Council conducts citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Australian Government bi-monthly, with a special ceremony on Australia Day each year.**

**Please note: Council has no role in the processing or determination of citizenship applications or holding of citizenship tests.  For enquiries, information on the status of your application, allocation and/or changes to ceremony dates, or to apply for citizenship, contact the Department of Home Affairs by telephoning  131 881 (within Australia)  or +61 2 6196  0196 (outside Australia) or visit  https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/
