Mosquito Monitoring Underway - 6/11/2009  Printer Friendly

Mildura Rural City Council commenced its mosquito monitoring program this week as part of an annual effort to detect and control the potential spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Mozzies will be regularly trapped at four locations throughout the municipality and sent to Melbourne for identification and virus isolation of diseases such as Ross River Virus and Arbo Encephalitis.

Portfolio Councillor for Environment Nick Cavallo said the threat of disease from mosquitoes must be taken seriously as there are a number species locally that are capable of transmitting disease.

“Most mosquitoes simply pose a nuisance value however it is important for Council and the community to be vigilant as the mosquito season approaches,” he said.

Council conducts weekly disease checks at a number of sites close to residential areas throughout the municipality, while treating any breeding sites on public land when necessary. “Sentinel” chickens are also tested on a weekly basis, for the presence of mosquito- borne viruses.

While Council does not spray for adult mosquitoes, major breeding sites are treated when required and Council’s surveillance program helps ensure any potential spread of mosquito-borne diseases is detected early.

Up to 90 percent of mosquito breeding sites are produced as a result of man-made activity and Cr Cavallo said residents should look for any amount of exposed water on their properties.

“Mozzies thrive in shallow water and despite dry conditions early reports are showing numbers to be similar to previous years.”

To reduce the chances of a mosquito breeding site in your neighbourhood people should overturn or empty any containers that might gather water, cover water storage areas, drain any stagnant or polluted water and stock any ornamental ponds with fish that will eat mosquito larvae.
